• The Hopewell Orientation is mandatory.  You should make your travel plans accordingly.

Generally, each student is expected to take approximately 15 credits each semester, and will receive an official transcript from the Chinese university that he or she attends. Hopewell Education will work closely with each student and his academic advisor to ensure that the courses chosen reflect a full-time load and meet the academic requirements for credit transfer at his or her home institution.

After your semester or year abroad, Hopewell will send the official transcript both to your home college or university and your home address. The transcripts will arrive within three months after the end of the study abroad program, and will only be sent if your fees are paid in full. Hopewell keeps an official copy of your transcript on file at our central office. Requests for additional transcripts should include your full name at the time of study abroad, dates of attendance, the complete mailing address where the transcript should be sent, your current email address, your signature, and a check of $10 per transcript payable to Hopewell Education.

Robert Powell, Resident Director, has lived in China for the past eight years. During his time in China, he has helped many Chinese students gain admissions to American undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as assisted American students in their stay in Beijing. Rob holds a BS in Chemical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University and an MA in Chemical Engineering from Princeton University. In college, Rob spent a year as a Junior Year Abroad student at the University of Edinburgh and greatly enjoyed his time abroad.

Becky Gao, Program Coordinator, is a native of Beijing and an experienced teacher of Chinese to foreigners. Over the past five years, she has helped many Americans gain Chinese language proficiency. Becky has a great passion for teaching, and will be our program coordinator in Beijing. She has a BA degree in English, which makes it easier when it comes to helping native English speakers learn Chinese.

Hopewell’s program fees, inclusions, and estimated additional costs, are outlined below. Payment Information:
1. Billing arrangement can be made so that your college pays Hopewell directly and you pay your school for the time that you are abroad.
2. If your school does not allow direct billing, we will bill you directly.

Upon acceptance into our program, you will be billed a $100 confirmation fee. This fee reserves your spot in the Hopewell Beijing program and is non-refundable.  Fees billed to students directly are due prior to U.S. departure. If it is necessary to defer payment until financial aid is disbursed, these arrangements can be made by contacting Hopewell’s financial officer.  Payment can be made by personal check, money order or cashier’s check and should be sent to:

Refund and Withdrawal Policies

• Students who withdraw after confirming their intent to enroll, but prior to the payment due date, will be charged $500 plus any non-refundable deposits or fees paid on their behalf by Hopewell Education.
• Students who withdraw after the payment due date, but prior to the scheduled overseas arrival date for their program, will be charged $1,500 plus any non-refundable deposits or fees paid on their behalf by Hopewell Education.
• Students who withdraw on or after their scheduled overseas arrival date for their program will be charged $2,000 plus any non-refundable deposits or fees paid on their behalf by Hopewell Education. Refunds are approved only after all relevant accounts are cleared. Upon approval, a refund will be issued within 30 working days. In the event that a student’s charges exceed the amount paid, the student will be invoiced for the difference.
• If you are participating in a full-year program and notify us in writing at least one month before the end of the first term that you will not be returning for the second term, you will be charged the published fee for the completed term.
• If you are participating in a full-year program and notify us in writing during the month before the end of the first term that you will not be returning for the second term, you will be charged the published fee for the completed term, plus $500.
• There is no credit or refund for a student who is suspended or expelled from the program for any reason.

Every semester, Hopewell organizes several trips to help our students better understand China and its unique cultural heritage.

We also pair each of our students with a local Beijing family, offering a rare glimpse into the family lives of ordinary Chinese.

Housing:
students live in double-occupancy rooms in an international student dormitory on campus not far from where they take classes. Rooms are clean and comfortable, and are wired for high-speed internet access.

Meals:
Students can choose to eat at small restaurants near campus or in the campus cafeterias. Meals are generally moderately priced, and Hopewell will provide a monthly meal stipend for the duration of your program.



Hopewell works closely with our host universities, local police and civil authorities to make sure that our students have a safe and enjoyable stay in Beijing. All of our students receive wallet-size emergency cards with telephone numbers for contacting Hopewell staff on site.

Health Insurance
Students will be covered by the Comprehensive Insurance Plan of Foreign Students provided by Ping An Insurance Company, which has been recognized and recommended by the Chinese Ministry of Education.

Immunization
Vaccinations are not required for entry to China for American students. We recommend that you consult the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website and also talk with your doctor to determine which vaccines you need before going to China. Please also make sure that all of your regular immunizations are up to date, and bring a copy of any immunization records with you to China.

Registering with US Embassy in Beijing
By registering with the US Embassy in Beijing, you will receive periodic updates from the embassy on various issues of interest to American citizens in China.

Where will be I studying?
Hopewell Beijing is located on two campuses: Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) and Remin University of China (RUC). Both schools are located in the Haidian District of Beijing, home to many of the top ranked Chinese universities. Haidian District also has a vibrant high tech industry, and is often referred to as the Silicon Valley of China.

Do I need to know Chinese to participate in the program?
No. After arrival in Beijing, students take a language placement exam and then each enrolls in a Chinese language class appropriate for his or her level. All Business classes at BFSU are taught in English, and Chinese language classes are taught in Chinese. If you have an HSK score of 6 or above, you may enroll as a regular student at RUC and take classes with Chinese students in your major.

Where will I live?
Students live in a dormitory on campus not far from where they will take classes. There will be many other international students on either campus: Koreans, Japanese, Russians, Americans and some Europeans.

Will my financial aid transfer?
Most federal aid is transferable; some state aid is transferable. Aid from individual schools is transferred at the school’s discretion. Students are advised to consult their financial aid advisor for further information and advice.

Do I need a visa to study in Beijing?

Yes.  Upon acceptance into the Hopewell Beijing program, students will receive information from Hopewell’s central office to assist in preparing to obtain their student visa.

Can I study abroad as a freshman?
Yes for the BSFU program, but the RUC program requires two years of undergraduate study prior to enrollment.

How many courses will I take?
Students are expected to take 15 credits each semester, which means 4 to 5 courses. It is important to speak to your academic advisor prior to studying abroad to decide what classes are needed to meet your academic requirements.

Visa Application
